1944 1 1/2 ton

Hi Guys, This is my first time to the site. I have been a car enthusiasts for many years and i have been looking for the something a little different to restore. I recently received some info from a friend who told me about a truck his friend has in another state. He has seen the truck and verified its condition. The truck is a 1944 1 1/2 ton stake bed with dual wheels. The interesting part is that it has been sitting in the (barn) of the original owner (now deceased) since 1966 with 26,000 orig. miles. He states everything on the truck is orig. and untouched. I spoke on the the phone yesterday with the owners neighbor who has know about the truck for years, he says everything is there and it has never been hit and has no rust? and the mileage is correct. I can purchase this vehicle for a very reasonable price. My question is i will have to and get it with my truck and trailer, about a 2500 mile round trip. I would like to get it i am just not sure how difficult it will be to get parts for this truck and does anyone out there know of the history or facts for these trucks? Thank you all in advance for the help Bob.........

Bob, parts for these trucks are easy to get. Most of the minor trim stuff is made reproduction, and most all mechanical parts can be found new or rebuilt. Other small parts will be simple to get, and if it as nice as the way it sounds, you will need very little. A bit about the 1944s: They were made available to the civilian market only if the buyer was approved by the Office of Defense Transportation. The only models available were the 1.2 ton with the 158" wheelbase, and 194" wheelbase school bus chassis, both with 100 HP V8's. Since you are in Southern California (as am I), I can help you find any parts you might need for it.

47 Ford

I have been offered an old 1 1/2Ton truck as well by my wife's late grandfather who DID buy it at military auction years ago. It does have the flathead V8. Been sitting unused for years. 2 of the rear wheels/tires are missing.
I think its a 47 Ford, but perhaps someone more in the know can identify it better for me. It does have a long wheelbase, not sure if its the 158" or a bus 194". Where on the web can reproduction parts be had for these trucks?
Can the brakes be updated or Power assist be added. I was thinking of getting it and updating with a 460 engine, but am unsure if the transmission would bolt up to it. Would rather have stick than automatic in such a truck. Wheels are much bigger than todays 1 Ton trucks, not sure how hard it would be to get the wheels for it. Any more thoughts or info appreciated. Its restoreable, but been used around a ranch. Cab dented pretty badly but repairable.
Thanks in advance
Marty

The VIN can be found on the plate attatched to the inside of the glove box door, stamped on the bellhousing of the trans (lift up the plate inthe floor to see, it's stamped on top) and on the driver's side frame rail, on top, right about over teh axle. Should have a star, then something starting in 7. Check with some custom places about the brakes, they might be able to set you up with power with the stock drum setup, or may have help on converting to disc. I would not use teh stock trans behind a 460, before you know it you would probably scatter the insides of the trans all over the road. Thses trans aren't extremely strong, and the extra torque of the 460 is a good way to break that trans.
