Red face Expedition Navigation

We just purchased a new 2004 EB Expedition. Can the NAV unit be added after market? Will any of the aftr market add-on NAV units work (Kenwood 7015, Pioneer AVIC NI)? Thanks.

Do not waste your time or money trying to install the Visteon VNR. Search around, but from what I've read the Pioneer unit is good bang for the buck.

Nav Units

Hi

I'm doing the exact same thing...adding aftermarket navigation to my 2004 Expedition EB.

I had a big Alpine system, in my 2000 Expedition, Nav, DVD, TV Tuner, Sub, amps...and I intended to put it in my 2004 also. But frankly, I kinda like the factory DVD and audiophile system. So all that was lacking was the nav.

Here's what I'm going to do: I'm installing the navigation unit under the passenger seat. The GPS antenna will go on the dash, near the alarm light. As for the monitor, I'm sacrificing the open bin..the one with the change holders in it ...and having the installers place a 6.5" monitor there, flat, matching the angle of the bin.

The result will be a full-blown navigation/GPS system operating independently of the factory system.

By the way, the Alpine is expensive...about $1600, monitor about $650, but I've had it for 3 years now. And come heat waves or ice storms, urban canyons or hurricanes...that system has never failed. Never. It's simply amazing. And it's DVD-based...so you never have to swap CD's based on your location.

Hope this helps

Steve,

With the system you mention, is the screen "touch" enabled? Or is all access via the remote?

Thanks

Well, the screen itself is touch...

But the nav unit is not!

So, to do navigation I use the remote. But to do things like adjust the screen's brightness, I use the touch screen.

Kind of mixed up, but I wanted to re-use the nav unit, since I paid $1600 for it when it put it in my old '00 Expy EXP three years ago

I suggest buying a Garmin Street Pilot 2620 portable navigation system you can put on top of you dash. You can find this unit on the internet for under $1000.00. It will out preform the built in navigation system and the mapping software upgrades are much cheaper.

Here's a good writeup (by me) of how to swap out the factory radio and retain most of the factory options on the 2004 Expedition.

http://www.installz.com/index.php?showtopic=133

In this example the main things lost are the steering wheel radio controls, and the rear audio controls. I believe SoundGate or a similar adapter company might make an interface so you can keep your SW controls assuming your aftermarket radio has a remote control. I've seen a couple posts in the forum saying if you want to install an aftermarket headunit you will lose your OEM DVD player, just setting the record straight. If you have any questions let me know,

Mike

Mike, Thanks. That was an excellent description. In addition, for the Alpine Nav unit to work, I then need to break in to the VSS and Back-up light circuits. Sounds like a nightmare if I ever need warranty work!

As seen in the radio plug pinout, the VSS wire is gray/black @ the main radio plug behind the radio. The reverse wire is black/pink in the drivers kick panel/door sill harness coming from the rear. And since your only tapping into these wires not cutting them or anything there shouldn't be any problem.. But in the end it's your truck not my call Either way good luck hopefully someone else will find the info useful.

Thanks

Thanks for the description...definitely one of the best, most comprehensive step-by-steps I have seen...

Now, of course, I want to skip work and do it!

ha ha
