rear axle problems

I was backing up today and WHAM I thought I ran over something, the truck almost came to a complete stop. I put it in drive and pulled up a couple yards, heard some grinding got out and checked and there was nothing there. I got back in, put it in reverse, a little more grinding but not as much, put it in drive and things got back to normal. I drove it to work and things seemed to work themselves out. I did try it in reverse and things were fine.

What should be my course of action at this point? I would hate for the rear end to go and be stranded with my family

Madspence,

I have only had my Expy for about 5 months, but while it was in the shop getting the front sway bar end link and parking brakes fixed I asked the mechanic if he knew of any real reliability problems with them and he said the only thing he knew of was that the rear ends were prone to failing. I would have it checked out soon!

Take the rear differential cover off and inspect all the gears. If something failed, there's a good chance you find broken parts in the case. Also check your u-joints.

Exclamation '97 Backup & whamo, rear brakes lock up!

I have the same problem now with my '97. OCCASIONALLY, when starting out in reverse (not D123), the rears will almost lock up. Not quite, but almost. Replaced the pads, rotors okay but not great, cleaned & lubed appropriate parts, but still happens occasionally. If you DRIVE (fwd) through it, it usually goes away - very little brake drag going forward once you tried it in reverse.

Does not happen all the time - that's the rub. That's why I have not ed open the differential case yet. This one has a few heads scratching around Youngstown - even the good Expy mechanics.

Could it be an ABS or module issue with teh cruise control, brake sensors, etc???

Your experience is greatly appreciated.

BTW, for all the forum newbies, this forum can easiely save you thousands on repair costs. It's as good as gold!

Exclamation '97 It's The Parking Brake Assy!!

Well, scratched a few more Ford heads. Came up with a good answer. The parking brake assy on these with rear disc brakes in a drum unit inside the rotor. 99% chance that it is what is hanging up. Either broken return spring, broken jammed shoe, cable not releasing, etc.....

Heading to a reputable Ford truck dealer in area who just quoted me less than half of my local Ford car dealer to replace the parking brake shoes on both sides. The good dealer said that the rear rotors are USUALLY not as hard to get off as the front rotors.

We'll let you know..
