Question 54 Truck Rear Brakes

I just purchased a 54 pickup rear end for my 46. It supposedly has all the brake parts but they are disassembled. Something seems to be missing but I am not sure what. Mounting the shoes and emergency brake arms are completely different from my 46. Does anyone know if there is a diagram or something that I can easily get my hands on? I am a "see it to do it guy". Thanks for any help you might be able to give me.

I just took the rear axle apart on my '53 F-100. Here's the left rear brake drum:

What model was your rear axle from? The emergency brake on some models was a band around the driveshaft.

Hope this helps!

Thumbs up

Kevin,

Thanks so much for the picture. I can't believe I got such good help so fast. The truck it came from was a 54 F-100. The emergency brake parts do look the same. I do have another question. What is holding the springs horizontally on the side of the brake shoes? I was given some goofy looking nails in the box of parts but I figured them to be a mistake. Am I missing something?

Thanks!!

If you look at the pic posted, look at the bottom set of holes that hold the axle in. To the left and right of these holes you'll see the 2 pins or nails with the retainer springs and washers slightly compressed. You insert the pins from the back and thru the shoes and then put the inner washer, spring and outer washer. The outer one gets turned 90 dgrees to lock the whole thing together. There is a tool you can buy fairly cheap at any auto parts store to use that will push and turn that washer to make it easier.

I took this diagram off John's F-Fun Hundreds online store. Too lazy to scan the page out of my parts manual.

Thanks to both of you who responded. This should definitely help me get the thing together. I was surprised how different the two years were for the brakes. I'll let you know how I do.

FYI, there are primary and secondary pads on your brake shoes. The primary pad is the smaller one and goes in front. The secondary pad is the larger one and goes in the rear. This was a self energizing system and the rotation of the wheel supposedly transferred more force to the rear pad which is why it is larger. I struggled with this when I went to reassemble my brakes and I couldn't find the answer in my manuals. But then I was also told it doesn't make much of a difference. I finally found the answer on the Raybestos web site: Drum Brakes
