4x4 road noise

I accidently put my 2000 Expedition in 4 wheel high on dry pavement and now it sounds as if it is stuck in 4 wheel drive. It drives O.K. and the milage is not affected but it just whines loudly. It seems to go away at expressway speeds. Any comments or help would be appreciated.

If it was engaged your 4x4 light should be on. I would run through the gears sitting still on the four wheel, set back to 2 high, back up about 15-20 ft, then try driving regular. If you are engaged somehow in 2 high, usually backing up will disengage the system.

Try to make a tight low speed turn on pavement. If you're in 4HI, you'll feel a great deal of pulling and vibration through the steering wheel and the vehicle will significantly slow down.
