Pinging and Trouble starting when engine is warm or hot
Problems with pinging in my 91 ex, also problems starting when engine is hot, starts up great cold, but after only 5 minutes of driving, will not start up until cools off for a couple of hours, one mechanic diagnosed it as a bas crank position sensor, but didn't finish job, any ideas would be greatly appreciated, have already replaced IAC, TPS, and temp sensors, and MAF has been replaced and cleaned also, engine was totally rebuit, top and bottom, so I think my Intake bolts are ok, but ya never know. thanks again....Help!
BTW, when running, purrs like a kitten, just have to get it started, no more surges while idling or driving on highway.

Replace the fuel pressure regulator. If you do a pressure test on the fuel rail I bet you see the pressure drop in less than 15 minutes. There is a known problem that some of these regulators have springs off center that causes unusual wear problems. Your problems are minor compared to the oddball things they will do.

Had the same problem in a 93 4.0 Aerostar. The Ford people could not find the problem even hooked to a computer. I finally put in some new Motor Craft spark plug wires & fixed the problem.

Thanks for the info, how difficult is it to replace fuel regulator and how do I know if my engine is a sohc or pushrod? 1991 4.0 is all I know, sorry, any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks
Pinging and Trouble starting when engine is warm or hot
Had the same problem with my 94 Explorer, took it to the dealer and they replaced a tempature sensor in the manifold or in the manifold area. Took care of the problem. Can't tell you what sensor it was or exactly what they did as I lost the receipt. Hope this helps.

ckstrawser, was that sensor in the manifold or outside the manifold? How many temp sensors are there? Anyone know? I replaced a temp sensor on the outside of manifold, maybe the new one was bad also, It was fairly inexpnsive, m,aybe I'll try another one....any ideas are greatly appreciated, thanks again

Not sure where the sensor was located, but to me, from the way the mechanic at the dealership described it, it sounded as if the sensor was physically in the manifold somewhere. The mechanic said they had to pull the manifold apart. Sorry, I can't be of more help.

Can't tell you why, say it's a hunch. I have a 95' Exp. Preignition ping and a quiet knock. I have not quite got to doing the job so I can't say if this will correct the problem. I am getting ready to replace my E.G.R. valve. Pretty sure it is sticky or stuck. Improper exaust gas or air flow can both cause ping and possibly in your case a stall if it is getting stuck and the heat disapation with cooling may allow it to unjam intern allowing your rig to start up again cold. And "theoretically" (common word in mechanics) this would be a accessory part NOT changed with a engine overhaul.
