My 94 Explorer (94,000 Miles) pings under load while pulling a grade. I've tried all grades of fuel with no change. Once in a while the check engine light will come on while pulling those hills, but it goes on and off at random times. I've pulled it into the shop with the light on and they can't find any codes. The mechanic said that the early Ford computers kept loosing the codes. He thought it might be a knock sensor (?) and suggested that before he tore into it I put in new plugs and wires. He suggested platinum plugs. Any thoughts on his suggestion? Thanks for the help.
Barring a faulty EGO (oxygen sensor) or TPS (throttle position sensor)
there are 2 other possibilities.
1. MAF (Manifold air flow)is dirty/defective and needs cleaning/replaced
2. Lower intake manifold gaskets are leaking and sucking in extra air. Some have been able to re-torque the manifold bolts and others have had to have new gaskets installed
These 2 items seem to be the most common pinging issue fixes on the board. You can do a search for other posts on the ping issue and see the other posts and fix links

I am going to try this too..I didn't realize the MAF is so important. My truck has all kinds of problems but loss of power was one of them too..It's like i have to push the gas three quarters of the way down going up a hill before it would get up and go.
