i have another question about my engine i got from u auto pull it. i pulled the engine from a 83 grand marquis it is a 302. when i got it home and started pulling it apart i notice the pistons where 30 over and the crank is 10 / 10. so my question now is i went to get a new rear main seal and i wasn't sure which one i needed the one piece or two piece because the people at advance told me that the 83 grand marquis has a one piece rear seal but when i took everything apart the rear seal seemed to be a two piece. the spot where the rear seal goes does come off when i take the rear main cap off. any way the numbers from right by the starter are EOAE then below that are D3C and 12 if that helps any, from what i have read on this site it leads me to believe this is a 1980 block but i could be wrong. i just want to get the right rear main seal. thanks for all the help.

Yes it sounds like a 1980 casting number , and it sounds like you need to
pickup a two piece rear seal .

 

thanks, i printed some info off of a link that someone had posted to a previous person asking this question and if i read right it says that it is a 1980 block from a galaxie but i didn't think they made galaxies in 1980! any way i will go pick up a two piece seal. thanks again.

don't pay attention to the casting numbers. Ford really has a cracked up system. The continue to use previous molds until something changes or they feel like changing the casting dates.

 

so now i'm confused. should i get the two piece or the one piece? it seems to me that since the grove where the seal fits is part of the rear main cap, hince it is divided into two pieces i need to have a two piece. does where the one piece seal fits come off with the main cap also or is it part of the back of the block? thanks again.

i got to thinking about it and fordeverpower you said that the number would have stayed the same until something changed. changing to a one piece rear seal would have been a reason to change the casting numbers wouldn't it? so if it mine still has the 1980 casting number it could be between 1980-1983 and i would need the two piece seal right?

 

Two piece has a small gutter runing around the inside of the main cap .One
piece fits in the back of the main cap and looks like a tranny rear seal it installs much like a rear tranny seal! hope this helps

 

I can't say which one is what but you can always buy both. Looking at some information and the was a running change over from 2 piece rear mains to 1 piece on December 1 1982. So you could have either!

 

Mine has a goove in the back of the cap with a little spike in the middle of it. i will buy both but i still am not sure which one to put in. hopefully i will be able to tell by comparing them and one will fit better! thanks

It's a 2 piece. I'd lay money on it. The E0 (1980) block has a 2 piece rear main seal. Even if they engine came out of an 85' or something odd that wouldn't change the fact of which casting the block was. All E0 castings are 2 piece.
Now you won't have to make a trip back to the parts store to return that one piece rear main seal

 

It was the two piece i opened the two piece first to see how it fit and it was a pefect fit! Thanks for all the help i was confused about it being a rebuild and not having a clue what car it original came from or if it was this cars original motor even. i could certianly tell it has the 50 oz imbalance because the balancer is bigger than my 77. Any way thanks for helping AGAIN!
