Question How to fill in Air Pump Holes

I have a 302 with D80E heads and dont want to use an air pump in my application.
How do I best fill in the holes where the air pump bosses sit in the heads?
I don't want it blowing exhaust out thru the air pump holes...
Can I just fill it up with orange RTV or will that just blow out?

Anyone done this or have any suggestions for me?

The set screw does NOT plug the hole where the air is pumped into the exhaust ports.
That hole is not threaded.

Any more Ideas, guys?

I would use a tap of a size that will work and tap in some threads. Then use set screws to plug the holes. Of course this could only be done to a race only or off road only appliction vehicle.

You have got to tap the heads, then plug. And, make sure to use a pipe plug, just tapping for a standard bolt or set screw won't seal properly. As I recall, either a 1/8 or 1/4 inch NPT plug works, but it's been a long time since I worked on a 302.

Heads must very in design for these air pump pipes alittle. I have 1979 302 and the holes in the head are about 3/4 inch in diameter and down inside are taped holes for 5/16"x18 bolts. Looks like I would have better luck with an expansion (freeze) plug??

rainbowATF, that is the exact same as mine are. There is a tapped hole straight at the back of the opening, I put a bolt in there to plug that hole and blew into them (my engine is on a stand).

When you blow into them, you can hear the wind in the headers, because there's an *untapped* hole that goes off to the right or left, depending which side you are on, which is where it's open directly to the exhaust ports. The tapped hole must be just to hold the stock bosses in place for the air pump.

My application is on a truck, the original heads had these holes plugged with cast iron or pig metal from the factory. My new heads are the same part #, D80E, but were off a car and have the hole in there for the air pump connection.

I wonder if I can use 3/4" freeze plugs in there.. or would they blow out too?

BTW guys, I am not concerned with hooking up the original pollution control setup, since the engine is going into a '64 pickup. Also, the original '78 pickup did not have an air pump either.

I would use the pipe plugs. Heavier construct and will last longer. Pipe plugs are dirt cheap.

you're talking about the holes in the ends of the heads - correct - If so you could use a frost plug the correct size or get the inserts from Ford and screw them in and then put a bolt in the insert , because these are the same on both ends of the heads and your accessories bolt on there as such they are threaded and have an insert.

The inserts with bolts is the previous response I remember. I think someone at the time mentioned that NAPA had these also.

I went to a nut & Bolt supply house and he had a plug that threaded into the head with out buying the insert, which by the way are the same insert's you have on the front of your heads to hold the accesory bracket's. Go to a junk yard and yank them off a head.

Thanks for all your responses, gentlemen!

Guess I'd better roll on out to the junkyard and see if I can scare up some of those puppies
