E150 Idle troubles

My 1990 E150 has a strange idle problem. It starts up fine.. seems to idle kinda high.. then slowly bogs down and after a minute or two dies unless I give it some gas. Anyone know what could be causing this?

Thanks

iac = idle air controller/solenoid.

Hangs on the side of the throttle body.

Are these things expensive/labor intensive to replace?

Thanks

easy to replace if its the problem. Have you done a code scan yet? it will point out out of tolerance items. Group wisdom says its the IAC, but best to be sure.

I have not purchased one in awhile so I don't know the current costs.

IAC typically costs $29 or so and easy to replace. The problem you have might be the TPS which usually costs around $18.

You might want to just remove the IAC clean it and clean the inside where the IAC goes in the TB because it will be gunked up with carbon and put back the IAC and test it.

Ok, is there any 'special procedure' that has to be taken as far as safety is concerned when removing this part? Or is it basically just unbolt - clean- rebolt ?

Well, even I am capable of that :-) Thanks.. Now to just locate it. I HATE working on vans. Too compact in the engine bay for my comfort, but oh well

Is there a gasket, or any gasket sealer required, or does it bolt on without any sealant?

Question High Idle

My 94 E150 5.8L Club Wagon has just started idling high. It starts up cold high, and stays high the whole time, probably 1500-2000 rpm or so. I found this post. The IAC looks easy to get to. There is no check engine light on, and other than the high idle, it runs fine. It has 96K miles. Should I just remove the IAC unit and clean it, or just get a new one and replace it? Any other things I should look for?

I had the high idle problem, it was NOT my IAC it was the throttle position sensor.. The IAC was 80+ dollars, and the TPS was $35. (this was in summer of '02)

Is the TPS easy to replace? Anyone have a picture of where the TPS is located?

I am having the same problem on a '91 E150 (5.0L V8). Already checked vacuum hoses and cleaned Idle Controller (has rubber ring gasket).

According to Haynes manual, the TPS is mounted under the throttle body. I can see something with wires attached to it in that place, but it looks like a real pain to get at. Any insights into this replacement procedure are appreciated.
