That's it? I always thought the tag also had the gear ratio on it.

The new guy

o.k. 3.08 ratio, would the tag give info if it was a open or posi differential?

I purchased it cheap, and was going to keep the axles, differential and gear out of it as spare parts for my 1984 Ford : F-150 Lariat 4x4

The 3.08 is way too tall, will probably sell that on EBay, but was hoping that it had a posi chunck in it and keep the axles as spares.

Was pulled from a 1992 F150

That explains why it's 3.08 being in an F-150.

OEM#=E7TZ4209A / Teeth= 40 ring-13 pinion/
Ratio: 3.08 , Diameter of ring 8.8"

I don't believe the 3.08 was ever offered in anything but limited slip. So, you got a winner.

If you can get back to the truck you took it off of, look on the door plate. If the axle code is H8, it's without a doubt LS. But again, the 3.08 came only in LS to my knowledge.

Its open. There is no L in the ratio. If it was limited slip the ratio would be 3L08, or something like it.

Well, seems everyone agrees that it's a 3:08 ratio (bad for me) but 50/50 on it being a Limited Slip. Will pull the differential tonight and let you all know the end result. But hoping that it's a Limited as Opens are worthless to me.

Definitely not a factory LS unit from your tag. I'll tell you that right now. As far as 3.08's only being LS's... never have heard of a 3.08 LS unit.

Sorry, but it looks like it's worthless to you even before you pull it.

Great Debate is over, but silly question

o.k. Gentlemen, I opened up the Rearend and it's a 3:08 Ratio - Open Diff.

But, how can Ford list it as either 2wd or 4wd with an Open Carrier????

To be a True 2wd or 4wd doesn't it have to have either a Limited Slip or Locker???

KERRY SAID "never have heard of a 3.08 LS unit."

https://www.ford-trucks.com/articles/axlechart.php

Here it is guys, right out of the pages of our very own FTE.

Axle code H8 is a 3.08 LS made by Ford. Just thought you would like to know.

On that Carrier, I don't openly see any Clutch Plates nor Spring between the spider gears. So I'm assuming it's a Open Carrier, if that's correct?

OK Pops, you got me there. Doesn't seem like you'd want a hihg gear like that with an LS or locker. Still doesn't help Gary, in either case. It's an open unit. All manufacturers call their trucks 2 or 4WD even with open rears and fronts. Can you call it false advertising? Don't know, it's been going on forever.
