5.0 V8 in a Ranger?

I have a 93 Ranger, 4.0, 5-speed, 4x4, with about 180K miles on it. It seems to me to be a bit short on power, so I was thinking of swapping in a 5.0 with an ODAutomatic, Transfer, and computer out of a 92 - 95 Bronco. Does this sound doable - will it fit and work?? Anything to look out for? Will the stock axles work?

Thanks

Everything should work with the 5.0, just make sure you get everything you can from donor vehicle, computer, all the sensors, etc. There are many sites that offer good info for doing the swap, and in fact its quite common. They sell kits. I know you need a remote oil filter, new motor mounts, maybe a different oil pan. I think your t case will work, the one in the bronco should logically be stronger though. you need to get some other adapters as far as drivetrain goes too. go to your favorite search engine and type in "v-8 Ranger" and you should get all kinds of sites!!! good luck, take many pictures if you decide to go through with it. I think it also said it helps if you have a 3 inch body lift

It would be better to get an engine and trans out of a Mustang. A 89 up Mustang is Mass Air, and 40 more hp than a Bronco engine. To use the speed density system from the Bronco you will have to use a speed sensor, but you may be able to use the Ranger one?

Even better than the 'stang... see if you can find one from an Explorer. Definately the easiet route to take.

HMM - can't have TOO much power!! Using the Mustang, will I be able to hookup the Ranger or Bronco transfer, or will that take an adapter??

I'll do a bit of Googling - thanks for the tip.

Explorer V8 sounds good, but isn't that a 4.6? Not that much more power......... And 2000 and later?? Trying to keep the cost down a little..........

Nope. I know the 96 Explorers have a 5.0 That was the first year they had a v8: http://www.truckworld.com/Sport-Util.../Explorer.html

They used the 5.0 through 2001 model year. The 2002s had the 4.6 modular engine.

I have in fact even changed the spark plugs, wires, and oil in one A co-worker of mine has one.

Interesting - maybe I need to look for a wrecked 96 Explorer! How does it compare to the Mustang for power? Are they both Mass Air? Wonder if there's much difference between the 93 and 96 frames.......

Well, the explorer ones had ~215-225 horsepower from the factory. I think the mustang has a few more ponies stock. But of course all the aftermarket will fit both motors

The biggest difference is the electronics. You wont need to change the computer or anything else, because the rest of the wiring is the same in a ranger and explorer.

With the stang motor, you have to rewire practically everything, and IIRC, get a new computer too. (could be wrong on that

You will not be able to use a Ranger PCM with any of the 5.0's. The PCM for an Explorer 5.0 cannot even accept a manual tranny.

If I were going to do this, I would use a Mustang 5.0 setup - PCM and all - except use the Explorer 5.0 water pump and accessory brackets. They are shorter in depth and leave you more room on the front of the engine.

The Explorer engine would be a good setup if you could find one because you would get either GT-40 heads or GT-40P heads (depending on the year), the GT-40 lower intake, and the Explorer upper intake (almost identical to a Cobra intake). The one thing I would change would be the cam and put in 1.7 roller rockers. The Explorer cam is a toothpick in comparison to even a stock Mustang cam.

If you are going with a manual tranny, I would look for a Mustang setup. If you are going with an automatic, I would look for an Explorer setup and just change the cam and roller rockers on install.

No matter which way, you have to change motor mounts and get an oil filter relocation kit. There are a few other things also - jsut don't remember right now...

just about the only manual trans option with 4x4 is the stang t5 with t case adapter.shifter position is seat all the way back.the stang t5/ranger tcase is weak also.the only combo i know that will hold up is extremly expensive.4 grand for atlas tcase and tko.
an explorer motor,4r70w auto, and ex awd tcase, with stang ecc iv,and bauman trans comp will be stronger and fit betterand still cost about 4 grand for all.a slighty cheaper option would be 96-97 ex/mount drivetrain and 94-95 stang ecc 4.5.

My truck is a 5speed now. but getting tired of shifting in traffic!! so plan is to go with a OD Automatic. So I'm thinking of a complete transplant from a 5.0 Explorer into the Ranger - engine, trans, wiring, PCM.... That sounds the easiest, and should have most everything I need from the donor vehicle - just need to find a wrecked v8 Explorer!!

Sounds like I can get 250 - 300 ponies with some simple tweaks to the Explorer - cam, manifold, headers, etc.

Is the 96-97 Explorer full time 4WD? Will this be a problem with my manual locking hubs?? Or just leave them locked.........

I'm getting a lot of good ideas - this sounds very doable!!!
