depend on what exactly you're making the muffler out of...
Newspapers would be bad...
But, yes, some backpressure (for lack of a better term) is not a bad thing, and will retain your low end power...
It's a give and take..
more flow ->more power high in the RPM band + reduced torque low on the tach...
more restriction - retain torque in lower RPM range + struggle to breathe in high RPMs.
The trick is to find the happy medium that give you what you want out of the truck...

did you gain anything in high end power or throttle response with that homemade muffler?
How long have you had this on your truck? It may start to sound louder as it gets a chance to wear in. Just some thoughts.
