I have a 03, 2X4 F-150 5-speed man w/ the v-6. I have less then 5k on it. In the rain I have trouble accelerating onto the freeway ramp because I am spinning so much. Is it the tires or is this just due to the light rear end? I have almost always driven pick-up and never notices such a squirly ride in the rain. It’s fun but sometime a little scary .
tires and weight can make all the differance in the world also the type gearing in the rear end can affect this to, due the amount of driving i due,40+ a year, i replace my tires at 50% wear and and adjust air pressure according to load, this seems to work for me, do some reseach learn about types of tires that will fit your driving style and climate, there are a lot types tires to choose from, it can get confusing at times, but sometimes a good tire dealer can also be of good help, hope this helps

less then 5k on tires, gearing 3.73. Maybe it's the Generals. I have head that the factory tires are not very good. Looks like it'll keeop imatating John Force for a while until the tires are ready to be replaced.
I would say weight in the rear of your truck what f=2504by497 said, it's light. You might even have ABS for the rear only, some trucks are made that way. Also ck the air pressure in your tires and make sure it's not too high, little lower will give you better traction. Checking and changing air pressure in your tires is a must. Tires (quality) can be a factor too, new vehicles don't always get a good quality tire, they usually get a good riding tire. Some people like to upgrade at the dealer or after, I know I did and I'm glad. Hope this helps.
The only real answer to 2 wheel drive traction
is a limited slip diff.in the rear end.if you are going
to keep the truck for a long time it may be worth
looking into.I have an 04 F150 Lariat with LSD and
it don't spin out in the rain.
the truck already has a limited slip rear end. Thats what makes it "fun" when it spins, the entire rear end comes on around. My son says it reminds him of his video game.
I know what you mean about rain and the F-150!! I have a 1998, 4X2 and it hydroplanes when in water that is about 3" or more and spped is over 50 MPH. I have learned to be careful on the Interstate when puddles are present. I had Goodyears as OEM and they wore fine, I changed them at 70,000!!! and they were not "bald" and the wear bars were not showing. I did put he exact same tire back on, and still have the hyroplaning problem. If I get on it, or accerate from a stop around a corner with "gusto" she will break loose everytime. I do have the 3.55 limited slip rear end. Once you get it wired, it is kinda fun!!! Drive safe.
when i first bought my truck it had michlin M+S on it and in the rain it spun and fish tailed all over the place, ok half the fishtailing was done on purpose, but last christmas i replaced my m+S's with bridgestone dueler at's because they looked like they had good water treading ability, and they do, i hardly spin any more, unless i put alot of throtle on and really splipery surface, and i can't get them to fishtale, and i have gone throught giant puddles and 50-60 mph and they don't hydroplane. it sounds like the tires to me.
I had the same problem with my previous truck (2000 4.2 V6 with a 5 speed). I learned to take it easy on the gas and clutch when it was raining. I mostly had the tire spin on take of and turning. If you're spinning the tires trying to get on the freeway, you must be really stomping on the gas?! Well, at least now that you are aware of it, you can be more carefull!
i want you to think about the possibitily of be ing in a accident, ask yourself, do want to be incontrol or out of control, if you can break your rearend loose when its raining, an alittle gas, think about when you have to manuver suddenly, and unexpectedly, what do you think is going to happen??? im just talkin about joe-daily driver here, not modifeds, every spring an fall, we get some serious rain falls here, the last thing i want is to be hydroplaning when someone hits there brakes in front of me and i lose control , i really dont want to find out how tough my ford is built at least not that way
