Radio Swap 99 F-150

Hi,
If I go from factory cassette to a factory single CD radio is it a direct swap. Do I need any additional harnesses for the CD radio

Thanks for your help
Mike

you shoundnt as long as the plugs are the same, and not going from a stock am/fm cass to prem cd with amp, but why not get a after market cd player and get twice the sound with less headaches, autozone carries factory wiring plug that will allow you to plug in any kenwood ,sony, pioneer, ect.... directly into the factory wiring harness just my opinion thou.

I did the same in mine before my pioneer came in. You should be just fine. Dont waste your money on the ford 'key' to remove the unit. Just find 4 dtill bits the size of the holes and push in and out (against the resistance). Snap off the bezel for easier grip.

Just make the tool for the four holes out of a coat hanger. I would deffantly recommend going with an aftermarket deck though, the quality of the stock radios is not very good at all.

You can get both a bracket that will make just about any after-market stereo fit nice and a wire harness to make it much easier to install. VIP has them. Walmart does, too. You want to avoid cutting the factory harness as it may void your warranty. The harness from VIP or Walmart clips right into the factory harness and is all color-coded. With the right harness and bracket, I've put new stereos in in less than an hour.

A coat hanger, drill bits, or finish nails will work easy to pull the old radio out.

Good luck!

If I use a wire harness to plug in a new stereo, will my factory 5 disc CD changer work with a new stereo?

Good question. I'm not sure. Typically, disc changers use a black wire to connect to the deck. It sort of looks like a coax (cable) wire, with a different end on it. Before you buy something, pull the deck out of your truck and look to see how it connects in. It should stick right out..don't get it confused with the antenna wire!!

If that's the case, you just have to make sure that the new head unit is compatible with that wiring and has the controls for operating a cd changer. If you don't have the controls, sometimes they use RCA wires (one red, one white) and have a separate controller (essentially a wired remote). Since it's a factory unit I'm guessing it's not that.

In theory it should work. It just may take a little time to find the right head unit.

Try Crutchfield. They have a great selection and are very helpful. They give you install instructions for your vehicle and I know they used to give you all the harnesses and brackets with the unit you're buying at no additional charge. Their web site is www.crutchfield.com.

Just curious to see if you found a head unit to work with your CD changer. I just replced my stock unit and had to bypass the changer and the amp. Not a big deal since I replaced it with a MP3 player, but I was just wondering

Stock CD changer will not work with an after market head unit. I bought a new player and will put my CD changer on ebay.
