I just recently cooked my tranny on a 99 f-250 sd deisel auto with 160,000 km and I'm a little disappointed to say the least. I went to reverse out of a tight spot and it would not engage, as I reved the engine a bit it went in with a clunk at about 1500 rpm then drive was o.k. for about 2 km. then it started to slip. we could drive about 20 kmh for 1000 ft then it would slip completely, we would stop and let it cool off for 10 mins. then we could go another 1000 ft. 3hours later we were back at the hotel. truck was towed to a tranny shop and pan was pulled, it was full of filings (about a cup of filings). the mechanic said that ford has had lots of problems with these trannys and when he got a rebuilt from ford it came with an in line filter. Who, what and where do I go to find some HELP to get ford to help me with this bill as $4975.00 was what it cost. :-(
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Nov-02 AT 08:09 PM (EST)]Where have you been? Ford has a reputation of loosing A/T trannys in PSD trucks. Especially the early models. If you're out of warranty then you're out of luck. Brians Truck Shop is the answer according to most folks. www.brianstruckshop.com $5000 is alot for a stock replacemt tranny. :-(
Same exact thing happened to me... I never had even a hint of a tranny problem not a single little slip clunk nothing. then one day I pulled into a conveince store nose in came out hopped in my rig and bam...no reverse it was just gone I got it out and a couple of miles down the road all gears started slipping then I lost 2nd gear.... 72,000 miles I guess if your gonna own a Ford you should get used to constant break downs My fords have been plagued with problems I mean all kinds they have a poor quality product, but I like them

99 F-250 PSD reg. cab Long Bed 4+4 (new tranny)
I've been reading Ford related message boards since 1997. It seems that almost weekly, someone with a PSD is buying a new tranny. I think in all that time I've read about maybe 2 gas engine tranny failures.(4R100) I have 94,500 miles on mine and still shifts fine.
OK.....just wondering about these trannies. I bought a new 02 f350 v10, auto.at 300 miles, yes 2 zero's.....was replaced...blinkin od lite, weird up and dwn shifts...ok a factory defect....now on higher mileage trks, what are you towing? and in od or not? factory say's od is ok for ALL towing...i use od down hill or level over 70, back roads no over drive(i tow a 7000 lb tt) (3:73)..next question...i feel fluid change first time is due at 5,000 miles and every 10,000 after that if you tow all the time......in the old days if you had a manual trannie and lugged the engine, you hurt the drivetrain, (u-joints, engine and clutch...high rpm's where better)...now in the tech age who most do not have a clue what to do ( old timers/ excluded) that rely on a computer to think for them. the new engines are tough..weak point is the trannie, hot=doomed...fluid fresh, cool= ok.....high rpm's are still better...forget mpg think $per year..auto trannies are ok .....but do not think for themselves.......listen and you should hear what what you truck, motor, etc. is telling you...my 10 cents worth is worth a wooden nickle!!

I have towed WAY over limit (16,000 lbs. over (36,000 lbs.)), and OD is fine if you are at a stable speed well above the minimum shift point that it goes into OD (usually about 40). So at about 50 and up, depending on load, it should be fine. If it hunts back and forth at the speed you have to go with the weight you have, then lock out OD. Otherwise it's fine.
Yeti,
The reason I ask is in the previous post the writer talks about an after market in-line filter that comes with the rebuilt trannys. If so I'de like to find out more about those, and if they are necessary on a 5.4 trans. Dunno the model number of the trans on my 5.4 '99 4X4. I also realize that the PSD is just a little more powerful than my little gas hog, but just in case it never hurts to have an oz of protection. Thanks

I have a F250 SD 2WD PSD and 4R100 with 57k miles and the tranny went out 2 days ago. 2nd gear is about the only thing that works right. I've only towed for about 1000 miles with this truck and that was with a load of less than 4000 pounds.
To say the least I'm pretty pissed off. I had manuals in my 94 and 99 PSDs with no problems.
I'm still going the dealer route for now since I'm learning that there have been problems with this tranny also. BTW, Jasper sells the rebuilt units for $2300 and they copme with a 75k warranty!
If anyone has gotten their trannies repaired with some financial assistance from Ford please email me at smsproducts at earthlink.net
