2020 6.2 6spd - Dealer says to replace transmission!!
Had my truck in to get checked out. It has had a whine since I got it back in January. A slight whine in first, second and third. They just called to say the pump is bad and, "Best course of action is to replace the transmission."
That seem pretty short answered and extreme. I have had no codes, no CELs, no hard shifts. Nothing other than the noise. Does this sound correct to y'all? And how bad is this going to hurt?
Get second opinion. I’m guessing tech never seen inside a transmission and to cover his bacon and have a happy customer his will just swap it out. I’m not saying he misdiagnosed the pump issue, just that he is scared to open it up and replace it and not have a warranty claim next week.

When I can get away from work, I'm going to go talk to them. I want to make sure they opened it up. I don't want guesses. Its been fine, just wanted to make sure everything was okay with the noise.... I wasn't expecting a bunk tranny. Maybe a suggestion to flush and change filter, etc. Not a full blow replacement...

2020 F250 6.2 6spd, 84k miles
Is this under warranty or are you paying for it???
If you are paying, go get it back and take it to a good independent shop, NEVER THE DEALER UNLESS IT IS UNDER WARRANTY!!!

Negative. Previous owner had an extended warranty with a third party that didn't transfer. So It's all me on this one. Ill certainly be seeking a second opinion. I haven't heard anything from the dealership since noon... through text message... stating "trans pump is out on transmission. That is what is causing the issue that you are having" "Best course of action is to replace the transmission."
I asked if the pump can be replaced. And I haven't heard back since. So, I don't have a great feeling about the situation overall. I am going to need more info on the situation. Contaminated fluids? Chunks? Burnt fluid? Code reads? What codes? etc etc.
Like I had mentioned before, I haven't had any CEL, or warning lights. Trans temps are around 180-190 while daily driving and longer trips unloaded.
The pump can definitely be replaced.
I would imagine they are saying replace the trans based on age and mileage.
Were it me, if I were to replace the trans, I would go find a good used one, something newer year model with lower miles.
Of course, this is something a dealer would never be willing to do, but an independent shop would.
Whelp, they got back with me last night. $ 4,643.42 to replace pump or $ 7,468.01 for replacement transmission.
I am going to pick up later this morning. It's ready to go, which tells me they never had the pan off or got inside the trans. All just audible diagnosis since no codes were thrown. I will drive until it tanks, or have a local independent have a look if it begins to shift poorly. I have also sourced a couple rebuilt available and a buddy who works for a municipality that has changed a few out, has lift, tools, and Ford software.
Really irritates me. Hopefully its just a noisy pump. Maybe it'll go in 100 miles, maybe 10K. Either way, Ill get some time to rathole some cash to cover when the time comes.
Ya get it back quick and mark that dealer as “do not use”. The 6-spd trans are pretty good and rebuildable. Sounds like you have a friend that can help so maybe drive it a bit more and see if any further noises or mechanical issues pop up. Maybe in the mean time start sourcing parts or rebuilds yourself. I would do a fluid change, drop the pan, take a look for signs of something. If all looks good then perhaps fresh fluid is all it needs?
