Body/frame or battery ground..

I’ll toss it out there now, I have googled and searched six ways to Sunday, and I’m probably more confused then I was to begin with. 2024 6.7 F350, I’m working on getting a couple things hooked to the up fitter switches. I have read “do not connect directly to battery”, and “use the negative terminal for the ground” along with “there is a chassis ground under the battery tray” etc…

I have purchased the Open Trail Creations no crimp up fitter setup along with their universal ground setup. I just want to make the best ground, easiest ground and cleanest ground solution I can. All that said, what is the best ground source under the hood for this?

Thank you all,

Neil

I don't pay attention to most things, on the Internet. If I'm pulling power from the engine bay, then I'm grounding to the battery. Example, my fuel tanks are connected to upfitter switches, which is powered next to the battery. I just attached my ground directly to the battery.

If I'm wiring something up in the back of the truck, and pulling power from the trailer plug, that I'm going to ground at the hitch. I've been doing this for years. If I'm doing something in the cab, then I'm grounding to metal in the cab.

No matter where your ground to, all the grounds will lead back to the battery.

As a matter of fact when hooking up snow plowing equipment, you hook without a fuse directly to the battery, negative and positive.

When you hook directly to the battery, you're kind of bypassing the BMS (battery management system). You're not going to hurt anything.

This factory location is where you want to ground to ideally. You'll be working in that area anyway with the upfitter switches.

To me, if you're wanting to ground there, that will work...but you're 12" away from the extra stud on the battery too. So at that point it's 6 of one, half dozen of the other.

The upside to grounding accessories there instead of the battery are keeping all loads where the BMS can see them, and leaving that connection out of the whole battery maintenance cycle where escaping hydrogen likes to create corrosion.
