1996 Ignition Control System in 1991 Bronco.

I found a 1996 f250 351W engine as a donor for my 1991 Bronco. My 1991 351W has the worst blow by and oil consumption of any engine I’ve ever seen and I’ve had many dozens of vehicles. My question is can I use the distributor and fender mounted ignition control module from the 96 in my 91 or should I just continue to use the ICM mounted distributor from my 91 on the new engine?

Yes
You will need to re wire your harness for the remote mount TFI module

This is the answer. Do not try to transfer any other part of the ‘96 engine harness into your ‘91.

Have any of you actually converted your old style (like my 91 Bronco) wiring harness to use the newer style distributor and remote mounted ignition module? If so any tips, advice, or instructions? I know the 96 351W is designed as a roller lifter engine but until I get it out and possibly pull the intake manifold I won't know for sure if it is roller or flat tappets. If it is a roller I understand the distributor gear will be steel instead of cast, can I use the gear from the 96 distributor and install it on my old style 91 distributor? Also I thought this 1996 F250 5.8 (DOM 05/96) would have used a Mass air system but it is still a Speed Density system.

I have not but there are a couple guys on here that have. I never had the need to relocate the ICM.

You did not mention what transmission is in the truck but only 4R70W and E4OD transmissions got mass air

My 91 Bronco is a E4OD and the 96 F250 4wd is an automatic so it should be one of those two as well.

I could be wrong but only California emissions spec 351’s got mass air. Living on the east coast, I have never seen one except what has been posted.
