I'm swapping my tired 400 for a 351W and I'll need a new Distibutor/ignition system. I'm looking for better MPG and dependabilty. Any advice to get me going? '81 F250 4X4
I have heard the dui is a good piece, who can argue with a clean engine compartment (no additional ignition box or coil scattered around) and one wire hook up. There have been a few people on here that have went with the dui or a similar unit. The jacobs is fine as well from what I have heard, kinda pricey though. I have only had experience with the duraspark II and msd and like them both. later
I went with a GM style distributor with the coil in the cap, and one wire hook up, I can't think of the name of it, but it was around $200.00, and it works fine.
I would second the DuraSpark II ignition. It's cheap and very dependable. I can't say that the others may out perform the ford set up but I bet the ford set up will out last all of the others. If you break down, you can get a replacement part any where if you have the DuraSpark II ignition set up.
The total cost would be around $50 for a new dizzy plus a core and $20 for the module. I run this same set up on my 400hp 65 mustang and had the same set up on a 70 mustang with a 460SCJ motor with 550hp. The 460 ran great until I ran it at 8K once to many times. Man that was a big smoke screen when it let go.
Thanks for all the info, I ended up getting my 400 rebuilt and switched from a 2b to a 4b which means a new carb. Now my pocket book hurts so the update on the ignition system will wait. I'll share my experience when I'm done.
