Whats the trick to installing fuel filter and not leaking?
I replaced the fuel filter in my 97 7.3 Powerstroke and got a noticeable drip leak, went to Napa, got a new filter with the cap, filter and gasket, upon inspection the old new filter had a large diameter flat rubber gasket that didn't look right so installed the $30 napa filter, this one has a rubber ring gasket with a raised ridge in the middle on both sides - this one fits in the recess in the housing where the last one was larger diameter and would ride on top of the housing.
The new napa still leaks - noticeably less but still drips down the back of the engine.
Is there a correct filter cap and gasket? Should I use a gasket sealer? I'm assuming a complete alcohol wash to get the diesel fuel cleaned will be required for almost any sealer. HELP PLEASE! Its driving me crazy and that is a short trip! Thanks
Motor craft filters always work for me with no sealer.
ATF with a rag can cleans up the surface fast for me
The other brands gaskets have leaked on me in the past and i stick with what dont leak
If it's leaking down the back of the engine, that's a significant leak, no?
there was no leak prior to the initial filter replacement?
Motorcraft is best as mentioned. My buddy uses Wix from oreilly's without issue, I'm not sure if he still has the original cap or if it's been replaced or if they always come with a new one...been too many years since I had a factory bowl.
Truck never leaked until I serviced the filter. I didnt keep the original gasket or threaded top, The first replacement gasket was larger diameter and flat both sides.
Diesel fuel seems to provide ample lubrication.
Looking for Motorcraft filter now.
I'll be back!
