Ford 300 6-cylinder research project - block and head casting numbers

I encourage anyone with anything to add to feel free to do so here.

Do you have a Ford 300? Do you think it's an early example from 1965 or 1966? 1967-1974 may also be of interest to check if you have one.

Looking into what the block and head castings show on these early 300s. If you have a 240 and want to add info that is fine as well. I and others will appreciate it.

For the block casting numbers - shouldn't be too hard to see - on the passengers side of the block down low in front of the starter area.

My 1966 F250 4x4 truck has a C6AE-6015-D and a date code of 6B23 (February 23, 1966) as shown in this picture.

What does yours show? Anyone with a 1965 C5TE-6015-* or 1966 C6TE-6015-* where the asterisk mark is any one or more characters? If you have a 1967-1974 or newer, what does it show for those on your engine?

For the head it is a little tougher to find and see as it's on a pad underneath the very front end of the head just above the water pump and below the thermostat housing.

In this picture I have removed both the water pump and thermostat housing but it's probably visible with them installed. Mine is a C6AE-C on the right looking at the front of the engine and to the left is a smaller letter A on its side with the top pointing toward the drivers side. Hopefully this picture is clear enough.

Anyone have a head with a T instead of an A on these early heads?

The date code and another possible letter should be underneath the valve cover. The date code on my engine is under the cover before the first rocker arm. 6B10 (February 10, 1966).

And on my engine the letter A is at the back under the valve cover after the last rocker. Looking from the driver's side here the A is on its side with the top pointing toward the firewall.

Again, anyone with a T in that location instead of an A with these early heads?

That's it. I know if your valve cover is installed you may not want to remove it for this project and I understand that. But hopefully you can still take a picture of anything exterior in those areas and post it here or type what you see. I'm interested to see whatever you've got. All information is good and the more data that can be gathered here is great. Let us know what you've got if you would please. Thank you!!

Well, no responses to this one yet. I know the 300 is not as common as the 240 but I thought there would be at least one or two who would chime in with original examples. Feel free to do so, this isn't a trick or anything like that. But I've also just yesterday found the smoking gun so to speak. I'd started this thread in the engines area as I started my deep dive - if anyone is curious about the context of this project here's the link to it.

Help me ID what I've got please - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums

So, the block casting prefix is C6AE on both of those it looks like. Same as my 4x4 300 in that regard - that in itself is interesting that it's not a C6TE in any of these cases. But the large T clearly. I really wonder how my truck ended up with the combination of the A head with the non- F100/250 2WD valve springs and retainers on the exhaust. If someone found the A head with that close of a date quite the coincidence and then possibly swapped the springs to it from an original T head? Oh well, 60 years on hard to tell what might have happened. Thanks for the pictures, that helps at least somewhat for sure. All bets are off! <chuckle/>
