I'd like to confirm this with you folks. I bought a 38 1/2 ton but it's got a rebuilt eng. in it. Looking at other trucks for sale, I'm thinking the eng. is from a 36 bec. the rad. hoses come down to the front of the valve covers. Also the numbers on the eng. start with 68 something. Which book would show or tell this info???? Thanks~JH
Usually they would upgrade a truck with a later version. In this case the last flathead design (48-53) from a distance resembles the earliest flatheads (32-36). The water pipes both run from the front of the head (they do cover the valves, but they're not called valve covers). Count the number of bolts that hold a head on - either 21 or 24.
The middle series flatheads 37-47/8 had water pipes that run from the center of the head to the radiator. Couple of major variations here but for the moment this will do.
Gary is right - is the waterpump attached to the head or is it down on the bottom corner of the block.
The early wp's pulled water from the top of the block and pumped it into the rad. The late wp's pulled water from the rad and pumped it into the bottom of the block. Same direction of flow but the pump did a different job.
