1962 Flareside F100

I have been watching the these threads for a while but I still have not decided the best option to go with for my situation, so here I am hopefully you guys will have some suggestions to help me figure out which way to go . I have a 62 f100 it originally came with the 223 and the T98 4 speed floor shift . The transmission is in good shape so I would like to keep it ,the engine is gone , it’s a long story because of a bad dishonest mechanic . So at this point I need to decide which engine to go with, I am open to any and all suggestions but would like to keep it as simple as possible because I just want it running . I will probably do more in the future but it has been sitting for months with no engine because he won’t give the original back and I am tired of it not running . Which engine options should I consider and what would work the best for this situation ? Thanks

I would stick with a 6 cylinder. A 240 or 300. Do you retain the bell housing, that may guide your decision. I had hopes of swapping my 240 out for my 390 into my '66 F250, but I decided that I don't need the extra power and weight for a utility truck. Keep it simple unless you want to make this a play truck. Where are you located? Perhaps someone has something laying around.

If you don't want to have to add motor mounts stay with a 6. A 223 or 262 would work. Even if you went with a 292 V8 of that era you would have to weld a front motor mount to the front cross member to accept the 292

The T98 uses the early ford "Big Four" bellhousing pattern. This pattern fits 215, 223, 262, 272, 292 and 312 blocks.

The 240/300 uses the small block Ford "butterfly" pattern. Same as 289, 302 and 351W to name some.

The T98 bellhousing won't bolt to a 240/300 and the 240/300 bellhousing won't bolt to a T98.

I do not know of any adapters to mate the various combinations of the two different designs.

Much easier to stick with the Big Four bellhousing pattern if you stay with the T98. No custom machining work needed at all.

Thanks guys ! This information helps a lot . It does have the bell housing and I am in the DFW area of Texas so I would be surprised if I couldn’t find the parts I needed. Now I know what the best options are so I just need to get the engine.
