351w Balancer/Flywheel reccomendations
First, upon inspection of the motor I found that the rubber around the harmonic balancer (dampener) was very cracked. The motor is from a 78 T-bird and I am rather certain that it is the original so it makes sense it would be worn out. The stock replacement for it range from the $60-$100 range, but there are some aftermarket ones that go from $90-$150. Whenever I replace something on the truck I shoot for OEM+, it isn't a show truck, nor is it high HP. Just an old farm truck that I want to keep on the road as long as possible. Does anyone have dampener recommendations? One of the things I liked about some of the aftermarket ones is the improved timing mark visibility.
Second, the M5OD-R2 that I purchased used is in great shape, the internals look lightly used with no issues. I am just going to upgrade the rear shifter rail seals, rebuild the shifter bushing (?), and replace the front and rear seals since they are easy to get to. The big issue is the flywheel and clutch that came with it. The clutch components look usable, but I know the flywheel is from a mid-90's 302 so it will not work on the 351w due to the balance weight difference. Again, I would like to go OEM+, but their is a myriad of flywheels out there. The ones that are called OEM replacement look like they would work fine, but I would like to hear suggestions on possible upgrades.
Second and half, the clutch itself is from a mid-90's F-150. I think it would meet my needs fine, but I have never mated a used clutch to a new flywheel. Is a new clutch and pressure plate recommended? I know new is always better, but I am looking to save some money if at all possible.
To add context, this truck will be used to haul things, but nothing too heavy. I also do not plan on pulling a trailer regularly with it. Actually, I do not see ever pulling with it as it does not have a hitch, nor do I have a trailer.
I really appreciate any input, Thanks.
