So the non-PI V10 in my early 99 F250 (manufactured date of 01/1998) has gone kaputz. I'll be pulling it apart to find out what happened (coolant coming out of the exhaust and around the head gasket, lovely rod knock from the bottom end), but planning for finding a replacement motor on a budget. I know the PI heads started in 2000. Is there any reason I couldn't or shouldn't find a running 2000-2004 PI 2V V10 and swap it into the 99 truck? Could I use a 2000-2004 transmission also? I'm looking at a couple on FB marketplace that are engine/trans together, 100k LESS miles than my truck, running and good condition for $1200-$1500 for engine and trans together. I've heard rumor that the early 99 trucks had a different transmission slightly? Would my early 99 ECM be fine with the 00-04 engine AND transmission? I could also keep my existing transmission and just replace the motor. Any reason I couldn't use the early 99 ECM with 00-04 engine?
I did a PI swap on my 99. The newer trans will work and the PCM is fine as the upgrades are all mechanical (better flowing heads, intake, and cam profile), it's an across the board 30+HP gain. I added LT's and a custom tune.
