Engine swap ‘99 into a ‘13?

I have a 2013 E350 with a 6.8L V10. It has a bad motor. I have a ‘99 E350 6.8L V10 with a good motor that I’m trying to determine if it can be used in the 2013 van. I believe that both are 2V motors, correct? Can the ‘99 motor be used in the ‘13 van? What, if any, issues or incompatibilities should I anticipate? TIA.

E-Series never ever received the 3V heads---all the way to end of life in 2013 they were all 2V's only.

The engines themselves should swap over physically but make sure the good motor is or is not with PI heads and that should match what you're replacing. Almost guaranteed the '13 will have those heads, the '99 might not but that'll depend what month in '99 it was built. Don't quote me on this but I've read the non-PI blocks aren't compatible with the PI heads but you'll want to confirm that in the V10 sub-forum.

Sensors from the '13 should be direct fits also (assuming same heads) and as you probably already know those would be what the PCM reads to set operating conditions.

I should have a photo of the ID marks for PI heads if needed--lemme know!

Sorry, but I’m not sure that I completely understood you. I already knew that 3v wasn’t a concern, as E350’s never had them. I wasn’t planning on swapping heads between the two. If both are PI engines, then it should be fine. But, given that the donor is a ‘99, I’m expecting that it will be non-PI. Can a non-PI engine go into a ‘13? And if so, will there be any issues?

I’ll check the ‘99 for the PI markings next time I’m near it...passenger side head, near the front, right?

Thanks

Exhaust manifolds may be different. Check and see. You may be able to use the '99 manifolds depending where the o2 sensors are located.

My apologies if I added TMI---as for the entire 99 engine's compatibility in the 2013 chassis I can't accurately answer---the issue of sensors along with exhaust manifold issues will play a part I'm sure. I know beginning 2004-2005 the electronic throttle body along with more CAN-bus electrical implementation will also play a part in which sensors will or will not work with the 2013's factory wiring and PCM straegies.

Following is an image of 5.4 PI Head markings---from the passenger side they'd be just under Cylinder #2; on the driver's side they'd be towards the back, perhaps under Cylinder #9.

Hope this is helping not hindering!
