Good evening all! I have a question that needs some input. I've got a 1999 Super Duty with 120,000 miles. This runs very well. I am it's second owner.
My problem is, I have a "Rattle" for several minutes at startup. It is definitely not from the top end. I thought it was a loose exhaust shield, but it seems loudest near the oil pan underneath.
Oil pressure is great (on the gauge). Doesn't use oil. Oil never has metal particles.
Thanks RVpuller! I will check this out when our frozen tundra melts in Upstate SC. Seems like this truck runs too good to have a major issue.
Blessings,
Dale
( "Rattle" for several minutes at startup) what ever sounds like it goes away when warm which sounds more like a exhaust leak or metal expanding heaven help the op if it's sloppy timing chains ,
I'm curious: does the rattle change frequency or tone if you gradually run the engine up to like 1,500RPM?
Actually, I haven't found it to change frequency.
I did tighten the torque converter cover and it made a big difference. I'm going to try the vacuum hose trick ASAP.
It sounds so much like a rattling heat shield, etc. definitely not from the front of the engine like a timing chain. It definitely originates underneath.
