Hey there,, have a ? Bought this 1985 or 86, 6 cyl motor with a trans, sitting on floor of shop , motor and trans not hooked together. Shifter goes thru 1,2,3, 4(OD) ...clicking good into place each time. When I try to shift into reverse-- Right and down- wont go . It is just sitting on floor have to hold it awkwardly ...am I to push down on shifter or should it need a little resistance- like be hooked up to something to go in? (have a spare yoke and driveshaft stuck in back of trans to make sure it is engaging, turn with hand.) It has no shifting rods exposed on side, I looked up in old Chilton it is a "TOD" so they say. shifter in top of trans, with a collar that screws to alum case. Motor was in a truck. (RTS BS EG6 on tag top row of #s) I have 1982 that has different type of trans, very similar-- but is done for...sloppy no syncros.. Used to working on 60s toploaders in Mustang etc.- can see movement of rods etc. Thanks in advance.
I remember the detent sprint being strong enough to make it difficult to get the shifter sideways into the gate without turning the transmission over when I had mine out of the truck. Once you get it into the gate, it should go backwards pretty easily. There weren't any special tricks to get it into reverse, but it's possible the gears aren't lined up well enough to engage. Give the input shaft a spin and see if that changes anything. TOD is closely related to the old top loaders from what I've read. Also known as a T170.
