Hi guys, i have an ongoing issue after a rebuild (about 9000 miles) and replacing (allegedly) the solenoids and body.
The condition is from park into drive the car will drag a bit before clunking into gear, giving it a bit of throttle seems to speed up the process. It is intermittent and happens more often than not. It does not happen in reverse and only from park into drive. No other shifting issues while driving. The buillder without discussion used liquid Molly vs dexron V.
The builder is untrustworthy and difficult to deal with. Im wondering if its worth flushing the trans and replacing the filter. Can the solenoids be tested individually?
You can still buy bottles that say Mercon/Dexron3 on the label (valvoline being one that comes to mind). You can also buy Mercon V, but that is not Mercon SP or Mercon LV.
I think Valvoline MaxLife has been recommended before. It at least claims to be compatible with LV, SP, and V and by all reports is a pretty good fluid.
If it's just MERCON, they found fluid that's been sitting on a shelf for 20 years. Nobody has made MERCON since 2006. And MERCON will cause the trans to fail just as fast as DEXRON.
I'll bet if they used MERCON V, you won't make it 20 miles before the trans fails. If they used MERCON ULV, I have no data, but my guess is it won't make 1000 miles before the trans is so damaged it isn't worth rebuilding.
The answer is to use MERCON SP or MERCON LV. Period.
This is the Mercon I was referring to. You can still buy Mercon Spec fluid, it just isn’t certified. APQI does checks on them occasionally to see if they meet the original specifications, but they aren’t certified fluids.
you are right that Mercon fluid hasn’t been made in 2 decades, but fluids that meet the original specs have been made since ford stopped certifying them.
the real brain teaser is that valvoline max life advertises to be compatible with Mercon, V, SP, and LV but I don’t think it’s certified in any of them.
Yeah, 'Suitable for use in' does not mean much to me. In house testing saying it works is equally disturbing. Valvoline is not a small company so if they say it works, then maybe it does. If it does not, I bet they have way more lawyers than you do.

I followed up it was mercon LV. The truck is still lurching. There was no significant metal. Here is a picture of the pan with the bolt from the solenoid body in the bottom of the pan.
