$2070 shipped to me TCI Replacement C6 Transmission thru Summit too good to be true?
My post are full of history. I find some are annoyed by o long posts. if youvwant tocskip down to the $$$***$$$ you can get to the meat & potatoes of my post.
My 1972 F250 Cream puff I've playfully named Brutus needs transmission work. Brututh 57k miles and a BIG
s has 94k ORIGINAL miles now. He came to me in 2018 with a BIG cabover camper mounted in his bed from day one of owneer #1's, Mr Miller's ownership. . Mr Miller solely used Brutus as a hunting lodge in his once a year 1600 to and from SanDiego trips to and from Utah. He also drove him about every 12 weeks 18 miles round trip to and from work.
On receiving Brutus I did change out the C6's fluid. It was actually a very nice flush job including the Torque converter. that ended up happening. If you check my post history fo"r * I have "no park" I for my C6 from 2019 you can read about how I had the opportunity of putting everything together 3 times and then end up driving my truck to my friend Miguel who is a transmission guru to get park back. Something, somehow fell out of position in the tail shaft back then that made a simple transmission service into a week of me filling and then removeing the pan to try and get park to happen. That same fluid remains in this C6 now. Except for what I drained from the pan.I put a new pan on back then,.that I had a bung welded in so I could much more easily drain the pan's contents.
$$$***$$$ : My 1972's C6"s takes longer and longer of a "warm up" to find a gear when it sits over night. Its started not finding drive when it sits for about 3 hours for about a minute after start up too. Clearly the pump is having some issue.
The fluid remains red with no hint of burnt smell. I see some chem trail type of activity color present in fluid color that is sitting in the drain pan. I saved the fluid but didn't really take time to analyze it. I used the same pan to drain coolant so it could be that. I only paper towel wiped that pan dry...idk.
ALSO....There has been a few opportunities where there is a shutter ontake off too coming from this transmission...
Ive decided to pull Brutus's 390 also. I've noticed that the idle isn't smooth. #2and #5 have lower 110 dry and 140 wet compression all the others are 140- 150 dry My engine has been leaking oil badly from the valve covers timing cover,, oil pan and probably the rear main seal. It's an oily mess everywhere. I'm going to fix all of that. This 390q.is in my garage right now on an engine stand as of last night.
$$$***$$$$ Has anyone had any experience buying **TCI out of Alabama ** C6 transmission through Summit Racing? For $2170 they ship to my door, a NEW C6 with offer a 90 day warranty on it.
This TCI unit comes $$$ MINUS a TORQUE CONVERTER $$$ . DO I need a new TORQUE CONVERTER TOO??? TCI DOES NOT want my old transmission as a core. I can have the TCI C6 in 3 days. Its my plan do my engine work first then as I'm ready to to put it back in I can order it so I don't use up the 90 day warranty by having it sit on the ground waiting to be installed. Miguel will probably take 10 days to redo mine. I haven't asked him how much it will cost me for him to rebuild mine.
$$$***$$$: What do you folks know about TCI C6' transmissios ???
You want a new/rebuilt converter, especially if you want a transmission warranty. Make certain you clean the cooler lines too. Good idea to replace/upgrade the cooler while you are there.

great points poiflushing the lines and dealing with the cooler...My truck carried a massive cab out the tailgate type of camper for 48 years...so the only other owner put a transmission cooler on at some point. The coole 6"x8'" x1" thick cooler he added is placed below the frame such that it and the passenger side tire are PARALLEL TO EACH OTHER it is NOT positioned at all so ON COMING AIR can can push through it only its edge gets that oncoming rush as the truck moves. down the road. Ive thought it both cleaver for its perfect little area to fit but also wondered how it could function effectively. IIts fins are somewhat mashed for whatever reason so I'll look at replacing and repositioning it.
It will not be NEW, there is no NEW C6, FYI. No metal in the old pan, reuse the converter, it will be fine.
Unless there is a warranty issue and the small print says the converter must be replaced. Would I reuse a 50+ year old converter? Especially behind a rebuilt transmission? Don't be a fool. Even if the converter does not hurt the transmission, why would you want to do the job again and why would you want to put all that metal through the rebuilt transmission? But then again, maybe nothing will happen and the car gets totaled. God knows that has happened to me on most of the cars I have ever owned.
Miles means nothing on older vehicles. This truck may have 5x the hours on it.

A whole TCI C6 for $2,170.00 delivered? Seems too good to be true, even with no torque converter. Maybe they can't sell 3-speeds any more and just want it out of their warehouse . . . ?
I would take a 50 year old converter if it is the original over a reman that has been cut and gone through several times over the years. 42 years as a rebuilder has taught me a few things.
Why not get a TCI converter? Surely they can recommend on that fits your application.
I don't think TCI makes the best converter on the market, but i think they are far from the worst either. I think it would be hard for TCI to deny a claim on their transmission if you installed one of their torque converters as well. Check your warranty paperwork, they may require the converter to be replaced. They also may require other items like a cooler to be replaced as well.
It's not to good to be true. C6 transmissions are very, very basic, easy to reman transmissions. No electronics. No overdrive. No locking converter. They're affordable to buy but very costly to operate these days, due to no OD and locking converter. You can get decent, strong remans from many places for around a couple grand and reman them yourself for under half that, using the same kits used in the remans.
Replace the converter too!....... match it (stall) as close to your cam and gears as you can.
