My v10 has 138k miles. Ive been noticing some tiny black particles in the oil recently. Im not sure how long those have been there as I usually dont take such a close look at the oil. I cant tell if its gritty or not as its super small. But it is hard and doesnt break apart when rubbed between fingers. Im worried its metal and the engine is on its last leg. What does everyone think?
That little black dot on your finger? How it the world did you find something that small in your oil, just curious?
#1 - I would not be concerned
#2 - if concerned and it was my engine, I might consider putting in a quart of MMO into the engine oil, run it about 25 miles, drain the oil, replace the oil and filter. MMO will clean build up/gunk from the inside of the block.
However, this could also clean inside the block so well that you could develope seal leaks or gasket leaks because the MMO could knock away all the gunk build up that is built up around the seals and gaskets
I am thinking that #1 is a good choice, but I am not an expert either.
Last changed around 1500 miles ago.
I change every 3k.
been in the family since bought brand new in 2005, with meticulous maintenance.
I would be more concerned about particle diameter and toughness. If it's hard and larger than 2 mm then I'd track down the source since it will damage the bearing surfaces.
I'd change to 5W30, too! Opinions vary, but I can't imagine ever running 5W20 on anything like this, expecially after the early V-10 recalls back in the late `90s for main bearing failures. I know those were defects theoretically, but still.
Next time you see the black particles use a clean magnet and see if they are metallic. If not they are probably just small pieces of carbon probably from the pistons, no problem for a high milage motor.
