Working on a '61 292-4V HD truck engine. Sat for several years. Did the "usual" - drain and flush gas tank and lines, put in fresh gas, change fuel filter; went thru the Holley 4150, soaked and cleaned, blew out all passages, new gaskets, needles and seats; replaced points and condenser, rotor, and cap, and plugs, did not turn or remove distributor.
When cranking it will attempt to start and will actually fire once or twice. Tried pumping accelerator a small amount, or to excess with no change.
Coil and coil wire are good, primary voltage at coil it good, points cycling coil negative. Plug wires are metal core and also tested several, they are ok. Tested spark by watching spark from coil wire to manifold arc the spark weakens after a couple revolutions on the engine.
Valve timing doesn't seem to indicate it has jumped time, but that's what is does act like.
I am a pretty decent mechanic having worked on engines off and on for over 30 years, and having been to trade school in auto repair "back in the day"(no computer stuff). Never found one yet that could beat me, but this 292 is getting there!
Looking for professional suggestions. Thanks in advance
Turns out the new condenser installed earlier this month was defective. Wouldn't hold a charge using the 9v battery test. Replaced it and truck sarts and runs as it should.
