Pinion preload - too high?

Installed new bearings into a Dana 60 LSD and get a little whine, primarily on coast.

Opened it back up to look around and find backlash and gear pattern look perfect.

But the pinion preload, after driving 4000 miles, is at 21 in lbs. (With the brand new bearings, it started out at 28 in lbs.)

Is this considered too high at this point? What should I set it to while I have the opportunity to change it? Or, should I wait and see if things change once the bearings run in longer?

You replaced the bearings, but reused the ring & pinion?
If that is correct, I believe it would have been best to measure the preload, backlash, etc.. prior to disassembly.
I am not a differential expert, but there would have already been a “wear pattern” in the ring & pinion that the parts are “used to”.
Changing those values would likely result in noises.

i hope you find the source.

I agree with @G2IC_Wraith

If using the old gears, they should be set back to the original postion so "worn-in" parts are re-meshed as before. Otherwise, you will have noise and accelerated wear until the parts "mate" back together.

Thanks for the reply. Yes - I replaced bearings, reused gears. Resetting preload to original value was not really possible because the preload was measured at zero! Nothing at all registered on my torque wrench. This finding is the reason why I replaced the bearings. I did note the backlash and wear pattern before disassembly. During reassembly the backlash and pattern ended up an exact match, so there's really nothing to adjust. It's back together and working OK now. Quite the learning experience!
