Ball Joint Replacement 1999 Mercury Mountaineer AWD
Felt some abnormal movement in the front end of my '99 Mercury Mountaineer while driving home about a week ago. It's had a lot of squeaking going on ever since I got it and could tell the factory ball joints were dry. I jacked it up and could see the control arm move quite a bit before the spindle started to move, and the opposite when setting back down. Ordered a pair of MOOG lower ball joints and a ball joint press. Tool got here yesterday so I dove into it today. Didn't even get started and didn't have a socket to fit axle nut, but AutoZone did. 1 1/4" deep well $14 plus 25 mile round trip. Got everything broken down to use the press and pushed the old joint out. When I took the spindle loose, I discovered the uppers were extremely worn too. So I'm ordering MOOG upper control arms from Rock Auto. I've been toting around a split boot for the left outer CV axle, and going to put it on while it's staring me in the face.
