Felt some abnormal movement in the front end of my '99 Mercury Mountaineer while driving home about a week ago. It's had a lot of squeaking going on ever since I got it and could tell the factory ball joints were dry. I jacked it up and could see the control arm move quite a bit before the spindle started to move, and the opposite when setting back down. Ordered a pair of MOOG lower ball joints and a ball joint press. Tool got here yesterday so I dove into it today. Didn't even get started and didn't have a socket to fit axle nut, but AutoZone did. 1 1/4" deep well $14 plus 25 mile round trip. Got everything broken down to use the press and pushed the old joint out. When I took the spindle loose, I discovered the uppers were extremely worn too. So I'm ordering MOOG upper control arms from Rock Auto. I've been toting around a split boot for the left outer CV axle, and going to put it on while it's staring me in the face. To be cont...
I figured that on alignment, especially the way the right upper arm is designed. I was also told by a fellow Explorer/Mountaineer owner to have it at ride height when tightening upper control arms at frame.
Stormy weather this weekend slowed down my progress, but I have managed to get the left lower ball joint pressed in, and the nuts off the upper control arm bolts. Ran out of daylight yesterday trying to get the bolts out. Hitting fuel or brake lines and got to get a better look before I just start prying things out of the way.
