I'm not experienced with winches, and this probably isn't a high quality one either. It came as part of a Power Fist crane from Princess Auto.
I did my best to thread the end of the cable through the holes, with a "binding loop" supposedly holding it in place. But the cable is stiff and unyielding. So the loop never ends up that tight. And it tends to get looser as the cable is wound onto the drum, forcing the inner part of the loop out of position until the tip is hardly bound at all. I think it actually got worse after taking this pic.
The cable still held my 70 lb test load securely. But I'm going to lift a 300 lb short block soon, and I don't want any crap-ups.
i do not rely on knots. i use a small cable clamp to firmly secure the end of the cable to the loop.
i also bo not leave a cut end. i either cut the cable with an oxy acetelene torch, or weld the cable end to have a small bulb on it.
