Hi all, I've got my NP435 on the bench, drained the fluid(was 1/2 water) and now I'm trying to assess what needs to be done. See pic through inspection cover, the magnet has what seems like a fair amount of metal whiskers. Do you think indicative of major gear failures or just kind of normal for a 40 yr old transmission. Also, I had problems moving the shift lever around to get it into neutral. Of course tranny was on the bench and kept rocking but it should easily pull out of a gear and into neutral?? I attached pic of the gear selector housing and forks. Kind of gummy and brown looking.. Should I be able to manual slide these forks around or is it dentented and too much for just hand pressure.
I believe I'll be disassembling further, looking for chipped teeth etc. Going slowly and luckily I have the NP435 in my '86 shop manual (and of course vids) to help me. Not taking this teardown casually; taking lots of pics, keeping it as organized as possible, etc.
Any info from experience would be helpful. Thanks. See magnet in the case bottom
The shifter cover from what I can tell looks to be ok, the rails do have detents and interlocks and can be tight to move with just hand pressure.
The magnet tells me something is making metal for sure, most likely a bearing or two. Hopefully its not the input to main shaft needle bearings as this destroys the main shaft and input shaft. Or the counter shaft bearings that can damage the counter shaft.
You are going to have to take this completely apart and inspecting every part.
What was wrong with the transmission before it was removed? This info can help you identify what parts to be especially critical over.
Thanks for the feedback. I pulled the NP apart and found this gear on input shaft i think it was that has missing teeth.. Further inspection ongoing. Hopefully i can get a replacement. Gonna look up the exact name of this tonight. Oh and i have no history on this unit. Bought from some guy's barn. However I could not turn either input or output shaft by hand and I swore i had it in neutral.
Editing this: Apparently this "gear" is designed w/ a flat "missing teeth" section. I was looking for replacement and all the pics on Ebay looked like mine, w/ this open section. Still learning.
