The T19 in my 1984 F250 with 6.9 IDI is on it's way out. I have a ton of metallic rattling noise in gears 1,2, and 3 to the point that it's louder than the engine or road noise. There's a ton of play between the input shaft and output shaft. in 1st gear you can rotate the input shaft at least 30 degrees before it binds up against the output shaft. I picked up a T19 of unknown mileage this weekend as a backup in case my current transmission ****s the bed. I already know it could use a new 1-2 shift fork. Is there a good way to tell if a T19 is good to run or needs rebuild immediately?
I've pulled the top cover and the gears and synchros look fine to my eye. Spinning the input and output shafts in neutral there is a slight bearing noise. At what level of noise should the bearings be replaced? There's much less play between the input and output shaft compared to my current transmission. Is there anything else I can look for before installing it?
If you can hear the bearings while rolling the gears over by hand, they are on borrowed time. Good rebuild kits are available & not too expensive from Novak Conversions.
There were slight variations over the years & also different ratio options.....so if the ID tag is still on the trans it will save having to strip it down before you order the correct kit.
