I know this may be a dumb question but I’m not a mechanic. I have 1999 7.3 with a zf6 trans. I have no clue when the trans fluid was changed last, it could have been years. My question- should I change it if it’s shifting fine? I wanna put fresh fluid in it but kinda scared because of all the people that say changing it after years can cause issues. So to change or not to change?
If you want to go thru the extra work and risk ripping the white shift boot and the black boot's fragile trim you can add an extra quart thru the top of the shifter. Some claim it's quieter, less gear rollover noise, runs cooler. I didn't really notice a change tho

Park it on a pretty good side hill with driver side high like in a ditch or soemthing and get the extra quart in through the fill plug.
All transmissions "shift fine" until they're slap worn out. They way to avoid premature wearing out is to perform regular maintenance. If you don't know if it was maintained regularly, it would not hurt to start doing so now!
