Hey folks 2000 f250 with the zf6 here. The truck has developed a noise that I describe as a rattle/ almost radio static type noise, comparable to a loose heat shield. When driving it will happen through all gears at low rpm and light throttle. It comes and goes quickly but if you can keep the same rpm and throttle just right you can hold the noise.
I can also produce the noise while the truck is parked if I hold the throttle right around 1400 rpm’s. Having a friend hold those rpm’s while I’m under the truck the noise seems to resonate from the transmission.
My first guess was a pilot or throw out bearing. However, the noise is there with the clutch engaged or disengaged. And as long as I hold the rpm’s just right the noise will persist even while engaging/ disengaging the clutch.
If it does it with the clutch pushed down then it will rule out internal transmission problems atleast. But still could be a issue with throwout bearing or pilot bearing. With the clutch pushed down is when both of those are spinning. Could also be something with pressure plate. Does it change tone any at all when you push clutch pedal down?
That rules out the clutch/transmission if the clutch pedal is depressed. Is there perhaps a loose heat shield somewhere?
Possibly, however the only heat shield I can spot is between the transmission and exhaust and there is no play in the shield and the noise doesn’t appear to be coming from that.
That is an interesting issue for sure. I recently had some strange dull noises and as it turned out ,it was indeed my clutch.
mine sounded more like a dull jingling sounds like the chains on the trailer tongue were dragging on the ground lightly. It didn't do it at idle but only at low load rpms. I began wondering if the chain in the transfer case was singing.
normally when you shut off the cruise or simply let off the throttle, while in gear at speed, you feel a more sudden decel moment vs ana auto trans. Mine had developed a delay in the sudden decline feeling and it become a slightly stronger feeling.
At first I thought it was the rear diff, not it so I replaced the carrier bearing, helped but not it, new u joints, better but not it.
turned out it was the pressure plate. I had a luk clutch rated for 475 hp. The new one is a south bend rated for 425 and far far smoother on take offs!
Hey folks just to update the thread.. I have solved the mystery noise.
The noise has persisted the past several months and after installing a new and much needed clutch I was at a loss for the noise.
Well I went under my truck the other day thinking it’s got to be something stupid. Sure enough there is another heat shield (I believe it’s a heat shield) that wraps tight around the exhaust by the transmission and has two metal bands that are welded to the exhaust to hold it tight. It’s not very noticeable from the ground since it really only wraps the top half of the exhaust. However having both the transmission and motor out on separate occasions you think I would have noticed it.
So a couple of hose clamps later and no more noise.. it still surprised me just how loud and precise the noise was at the 1400 rpm range.
Now waiting to the new 4” MBRP exhaust to come in the mail 👍🏻
