59A block rear main seal

This may or may not have been asked before. I'm in the process of changing the rope seal in my truck. Using a sneaky Pete i pulled on the upper seal and apparently there is a retainer that holds it and it came with it. I wasn't expecting this. Can I put the new rope in and just feed the retainer back in the block or have I got a bigger problem now? Thanks

I'm not seeing how the seal retainer came free. Can you post a picture? I'm worried you have a bigger problem.

I've haven't figured how to post pictures here. Had one of the older guys in a local club said that was normal and made seal installation easier. I don't know if it really made it easier but I got it back in with the new seal. Haven't run it yet. Still have to get the trans and torque tube back in. Hope it works ok. Not a fun vehicle to work on. Especially alone with no help. Much rather work on my 51 and 55.
