2019 F450 is in for a dpf AND converter replacement
Ford Pass said I had a dpf issue. Well, it was right, the dealer is replacing the Cat and the DPF and all the piping there after.
Now, I looked up the costs of the two units and wow, the dpf is over $3100.00 and the Cat is over $4,000.00. I'd imagine the pipes and vented tips aren't cheap either.
I get it, I have a warranty, but what if I didn't? I'd be starring at a $10k-$12k invoice. That is ridiculous.
So, my question is, what the heck caused these parts to go bad? Is this common? I've always been in the know with every ford diesel since the old 6.9's and I have been in love with the 6.7 since it's debut in 2011, so maybe I just didn't notice it, but I really hope this was caused by a factory defect and I never see these things go bad again.
Anybody have any thoughts on this?
DPF failures are not near as common with the 6.7L as the 6.4L but it does happen. There have been a number of topics over the past 11 years here but I wouldn't call it a big issue.
Yes, the emissions components are expensive and only supported by warranty to 5Y/50,000, also not supported by Ford's ESP which is annoying.
What Ford calls the "catalytic converter" is part of the DOC/SCR/DPF unit and yes it's $4,800 MSRP aka dealer price. The exhaust tips with resonator is $760 MSRP for the chome tips. I've had emissions issues, I get it, it's still a lot of money for something that should last a long time except in high idle hours use cases.

I didn't know the emissions warranty only went to 50,000 miles, that's ridiculous, especially when the owner did nothing to cause the issue
Then, to top it off, this isn't covered under esp, that's crazy.
I was hoping to keep this truck for many many years, but I may have to rethink that. Ugh.
This attached was mine around 95,000 with a DEF injector issue (white stuff is dried DEF due to stuck open injector). However, no soot and you can tell from the dull chrome, it had not been cleaned in a long time!

while there are 6.7's in the "just short of " million mile club with original exhaust systems, there seems to be a sudden increase of recent exhaust system replacements with recent year 6.7's. some of which involve alleged "cracks" in internals.
it would be good to know the % state of your DPF at the time of cel and if you tried to do an operator commanded regen and drive to clear the cel. reason I ask is because a lot of dealerships will go out of their way to look out for you and replace components while in warranty to prevent you from having out of warranty problems.
and ditto on concerns of keeping the truck til the wheels fall off. one of the obstacles on DIY'ing a lot of repairs is the IDS software needed to trouble shoot and calibrate.
I do hear about cracked dpf's quite often. In fact, I had an 08 that I eventually deleted (H&S mini max, wow) because the dpf was cracked and I have a neighbor with an 08 that has a cracked dpf.
If it happens out of warranty, I'm either trading it in or I'm clearing the codes and driving it. Those parts are ridiculously expensive
so apparently the cores from ford repairs are sold to refurbishes and the result is you can get a functional refurbished dpf for the 6.7 for about 2300.
with 10 years of 6.7’s there is a high likelihood when you’ll need a refurbished dpf you will be able to find one.

2/3 of the trucks mileage is pulling an 8000lb trailer. I monitor regens, EGT’s and check/clear codes with an IDash. the DPF is definitely not or ever has been plugged. I think the DPF filter material is cracked. Must be a defective lot?
my guess is that I could go on indefinitely with a cracked DPF & clearing the codes.
