My 79 bronco custom with a 351m is listed on my registration to weigh 4083lbs and my fathers 92 bronco xlt with a 351w is listed on his registration to weigh 4530lbs. It just doesn't seem right to me. My 79 is longer, wider, and the thickness of the steel on the body is definetly thicker and more solid. How is it that his truck is listed to weigh almost 450 lbs more than mine?
Actual truck weights will vary considerably even within the same model year for the different drivetrains and options. Registration weight is probably just in the ballpark. I agree the actual weight of the older truck would likely weigh just as much, IF comparably equipped. The 92 may have hundreds of pounds of emission gear alone. Some states did not require much smog equipment on trucks in the late 70s. I would be inclined to think the later model weight you posted is accurate, if not a little light. I have run my 95 2WD shortbed F150 over the scales many times and it is about 4200 LBS empty.
It may or may not be factored in to the numbers you posted, but the extra luggage on a towing package equipped 92-95 adds up to considerable weight.
I live in NY and I didn't think that we were all that bogged down with emissions here. Also, in 79, Ford started putting emissions equipment on broncos just like my fathers 92.
Just for the record, here are some stats about my 79 Bronco: custom package, 351m engine, c6 transmission. Considering the info I have given, could anyone give me a ballpark figure as to how much they think my Bronco weighs?
heck, that 351 m alone has like 300 lbs on that 351 w, and though the e40d is a little heaveir then a c6, that 205 iron case on the 79 definatly outweighs the aluminum chain drive borg warner t-case on a 90's bronco by a good deal.
The XLT is full of stuff like power windows, fancy seats and extra insulation. Add that to the E4OD and TTB front end and you could come up with the extra weight. Just for reference, a '94 F-150 XL long bed 4x4, 5.0, E4OD, A/C is 4425.
The E4OD transmission in the '92 weighs a couple hundred pounds more than the C-6. The '79 probably doesn't have A/C, PS, PW, PL, lots of sound insulation, F&R anti-sway bars, or quad front shocks. It certainly lacks the 4WABS, rear shoulder belts, PM, & fully boxed crumple zones. The 8.8" axle weighs a little more than the 9", too.
if i am remebering my 84 xlt scales in at about 5400, of course that didnt have the power window and abs, but it did have the big ole straight six, so a 94 weighing about 5800 makes sence. my brothers believes his 79 400M c6 truck weighed in at about 5700 or 5800 as well. We remember it being somewhere around 4 or 500 lbs more then my truck. i was under the impression that an 8.8 weighed just less then a 9 inch. Same brakes and axles .. but it doesnt have that 75-100 lb iron nodular center section.
