F100 vs. F250 Suspension Differences?

How are the suspension components of F100 and F250 different? Coil springs, i-beams, etc... I am working on a 2WD 1976 F250 Camper Special with an 8000 pound GVW. Other than 3" wide leaf springs, what is different?

The one main difference is leaf sprung vs. I beam and coils like you already pointed out.

On the up travel an F100 looks like so at the wheels: \ ----- / and for the down travel Like so: / ----- \

The F250 with leaf springs looks like this all the time: | ----- |

Can take a heavier payload is all.

He said his 250 was 2wd, so it would be coil sprung just like a 2wd F100. I'm assuming he's comparing 2wd's and not 2wd to 4wd.

Oh... I missed that obviously. As far as front coil differences. I don't know. Maybe a bit more spring rate, but I can't imagine a huge difference in the front. The back was definitely a stouter leaf spring on the rear suspension.

In the instances where a heavier motor, ie. 460, and a higher capacity radiator meant a higher rated GVW spring is required for the additional weight up front.

I don’t know myself never owned a half ton. If you’d like I can measure my front I beams when I get home so you can tell if they are bigger than yours. Springs are a definite difference.

If I were you I’d look into bushings and kingpins. Find the diameter of the axle pivot bushings and the king pins for a f100 and f250. If the mounting point for the axle and the mounting point for the spindle are the same I’d say the axle themselves can’t be much different. Also look into differences in spindles and specs. If a f100 spindle is $100 and a f250 spindle is $300, then there’s probably some more material or something with the f250 to cause the difference in cost.

Are you trying to figure out putting f250 parts under a f100 or vice versa?

I would like to lower the truck, but there is not much out there for the 250.

I have not seen anything for the front. All the drop beams are for F100s. Not a huge fan of cutting the coils as they are pretty stiff already. I have seen the guys using Explorer springs, but I am not sure if they would work on the 250.

I was able to find shackles for the rear end, but no hangers. I do not want to go as extreme as a full axle flip, but I have seen where you can flip the hangers. I do not plan to haul or tow anything heavy so pulling a leaf or two could also be an option.

Given your truck is a camper special it is likely the coil springs are variable rate and have some value to the right person.

Jack250, I’m in the same boat as you. I also would like to lower mine but not to the ground and it doesn’t have to be adjustable like on airbags but that’s not out of the question. I’m looking for a 3-4 drop on my crew cab f350, I think our suspensions are very similar. Mine is also a 2wd.

If you are wanting to lower your truck and not wanting to do a crown vic front end swap, then check out Johns Rods on Facebook (see link below). He does not have an actual store, but you can contact him directly and he will answer any questions that you have. He uses the factory I-beams from the trucks to get the lowering that you want. His setups work great for those that are wanting to stay within the stock parameters of the trucks. Great dude and very down to earth.

Johns is probably the best option. I have heard good things about his work. The downside would be having to send him the beams off of my truck. It has the larger kingpins and he did not have any when we spoke. That could have changed by now though. X2 Industries offers them with the larger kingpin, but they are pricey.

I was planning to go the Explorer spring route, but my truck has the tall spring perch and the double pigtail spring. For now I am going to focus on other areas that need attention and come back to the suspension later.
