1995 F250 XLT 4x4. i played around with the shift lever and the truck started so i assumed the neutral switch was bad. changed it and still have the same problem. if i get the no-start i can turn the key on several times in a row and the truck will start. also i noticed that with the door open the chime doesn't come on unless i wiggle the cylinder around--not sure if that'll help with the diagnosis. thanks in advance for any help.
Sounds like a bad starter relay to me.
The starter relay on the passenger fender is making the clicking sound but its contacts are burnt and not pulling in the starter solenoid.
Could also be the spade is not making contact down on the starter solenoid.
My truck has been doing the same at random. I first made sure my battery was still ok, and cleaned connections. They were both in great shape. Measured voltage drop between starter and battery during cranking, that checked out too. Starter spins over quickly when it does spin, and it's only a few years old, so I didn't think that was it. It continued to happen, so one of the times I popped the hood, jumped the starter relay, and it turned over like normal. I'll replace the starter relay one of these days.. But jumping the relay with the key on will keep me going if it happens again before I get to changing it.
Sorry for being late to the thread but it sounds like the problem I am having...I suspected a starter relay but can't find it, any one have a pic or a eatiled description of its location ... I did change the solenoid, starter, and the ignition switch and thought I had it locked for a few days but no...sorry forgot to add, mine us a 1996 f150
