I need a new alternator in my 1995 F-150 5.0L. It currently has the stock 95 amp alternator (I am assuming). Wanted to do a little upgrade on it and I found a 130 amp alternator made for a 1995 F-250 7.3L. It looks like the same exact alternator. They are both 3g alternators. Can I upgrade to the 130 amp alternator? Also, if I can use the 130 amp, do I have to upgrade the wiring from the alternator to the battery?
My first 130 I upgraded to I grabbed out of a 95 E-250/5.8 cargo van in a JY. Bolted in, plugged up the 95 amp original factory wire & went about my business.
Several years on when the bearings started getting noisy, I ordered a new Motorcraft unit for the same application.
No personal experience with the diesel applications, but if it's side mount, you should be able to plug & play.
One of these days I do plan on upgrading the harness.
On my '96 F150 with 5.8L, I swapped the stock alternator with the 130 amp from a '96 E350. Same as Scndsin: bolted in, done. I do have a winch, that was my motivation.
I did the same as Scsdin. I did upgrade the wiring though. It's only 6 or 8 gauge wire from the factory?? I put 2 AWG and a 175 amp megafuse between the alt and battery. Easy to do.
Done it to all 3 of my trucks.
