I hear ya Vern about how age plays a part with our ambitions to start a major restoration project.....still working on the F1 I "finished" 4 years ago. I agree that's a fair asking price, the engine & transmission are worth the $$$ IMO.
I saw that ad a couple of weeks ago. Sent the seller a message. He does NOT have a bed or all the fenders or the TAILGATE. The fenders he has are beaten like a rented mule, and the cab floor is rotted. It is a show stopper for me, an F3 needs F3 fenders, bed, tailgate and running boards and too many of those are missing. I imagine that if the price were half what he is asking it might be worthwhile since finding the missing parts will be an expensive adventure. I know, have had to do it twice already.....
Yea ok get your point about missing parts, but a rebuilt flathead stock engine alone is worth the asking price isn't it?
A rebuilt flathead is worth some good money, yes. I wonder if the seller has receipts for the parts and machine shop work, they aren't mentioned. The oil pressure sender and maybe the water pumps were re-used when new ones are readily available. I did see what looks like overspray on the intake, distributor and dipstick to suggest it may have been a quick assembly job. Just wondering that's all.

yep, I hear you. Was just remarking with a fellow fte’r today, he said you see more and more f2,f3 these days. I wonder if the f1’s are starting to dry up? Maybe they’ll be more parts made for these trucks in the future? I love the stake beds myself. That’d be good!

One thing to keep in mind is that 'cost is not value'. It's the appraiser's motto. He may have spent 3 or 4 thousand on rebuilding the flathead, but that doesn't mean someone else is willing to pay that for it. I know for the same money, I'd do my own and know what I have before I bought someone else's pig in a poke. It sounds like he doesn't have much in the way of body parts, so all you're looking at is the drivetrain and a lesser desirable F3 chassis. Partially finished projects in a basket rarely command more than pennies on the dollar. I love how he lists "all" the things it still needs. (I did this, you just have to do that) The reality is it's probably "worth" about half what he's asking.
This would be a good F-3 to F-1 conversion project. I've done it so it's not all that hard. A cut here and a cut there and weld it back together. All the missing parts are readily available for F-1s. When I bought my '48 F-3, it had a Dodge bed sitting on it, no rear fenders, and no useable running boards.
Vern, I agree with you. That project is ideal for a 1/2 ton short bed conversion because it is nearly impossible to find the missing long bed parts in New England. Tom
I have three special words that always hit me and make me pay attention: "JUST" "ONLY" "ALL" I contend any time you hear any of those three words in a sentence you are "being sold something" Example "Honey will you take out the trash? It will JUST TAKE YOU a minute" or "This widgets ONLY $49.95" or "ALL you have to do is buy a fender, a bed and a tailgate" Those Three words are Minimizing words to get you to go for it.....When I hear any of those three words in a sentence directed my way, I am just waiting for some "closing technique" to happen..... my Bride is a master at using them....
