I am in the process of building a rat rod patina look. I am at the point where I need to paint the following areas. The 4 original steel wheels, the front grille and the front and back bumpers. The color I am wanting is Wimbledon White, but those small cans are pricey and the auto parts store needs to order what I need. Has anyone bought spray paint from the Home Depot that is very close to that color? In my search I come across rust oleum heirloom white . it’s hard to decide, it looks different On every site.
I did some more research and I totally agree with you now, that’s a bad choice. I’m going to think this through more.
my ultimate goal is to apply a thin coat, then sand/distress it for that old rat rod worn look.
What are you starting with? pictures? Could you not just leave the body the way it is? Getting the distressed look is not as easy as it seems. In most cases it looks like someone is trying to do it instead of letting nature do it for you. My two cents anyway.

If trying to go for the "weathered look" I would get what ever spray cans color that is close, does not need to match the factory color as weather changes the color any way.
Then you want to sand it off so why do you need to paint a lot of coats?
Heck give the can to your 10 year old and have them go town on the parts you want painted.
Half way thru give them a different shade of white as it is coming off anyway and the 2 different shades will add to what you are after LOL
Good luck
