can anyone shed some light on how to wire my tail lights. When i bought my truck it didnt even have the light assembly, just some wires running from the cab towards the bed cut off right at the bed, ive lengthened them and got them where they need to be, but i dont know where to attach each wire on the bulb socket. Im not much one for wiring so i apolagize in advance for any misunderstandings or frustration........any help would be greatly appriciated!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi
First get a voltmeter. Then, go to the back, where you ran the wires, and separate 4 wires on each side. One should be for a brake light, one for a directional, one for parking, and one for a back up light. Attach the black probe from your volt meter to a good ground, and the red probe to any of your 4 wires. Go turn on the lights. If you come back to the rear and there's no 12volt reading on the meter, move the red probe to any of the other 3 wires, until you get a reading. This is the parking light wire. Label it. Go turn on the directional switch, and come back to find the next wire. You'll need the key on for this one. Label this wire. Go get someone to step on the brake, and find the 12volt reading. Label it. Remaining wire should be the back up light wire.
Hope this helps,
Bob
After reading your post again, I see that you were specifically looking where to attach the wires to the socket.
I believe there should be some male tabs coming off of the sockets, where a female connector will attach from your new wires.
You might have to buy and install these, but they're cheap, and you'll want to use a crimping tool on the connectors.

thank you, you mentioned "both sides" there was only one group of four wires that ran towards the back of the truck, am i missing part of the wiring? the wires that were there ran up the drivers side frame rail.
Ok, so do the identification test on those 4 wires, then when you have them i.d'ed, attach 2 wires to the single wire, and run one to the left side, and one to the right.
i tested the four wires brown, green,yellow, and black. When the head lights are on the brown wire is the only one thats hot(tail lights right?)
when the brake pedal is pressed in the yellow one lights up (brake light wire right? im guessing the green is the turn signal wire and the black is a ground, but i am not sure cause like i said im not much of a wiring person, and again thank you for your input!!!!
what would the two wires be for? the bulb sockets for my truck have three wires coming out of them, a red one a black one and a white one.....sorry if im bombarding you or anything its just nice to have a knowledgeable person helping
OK, all of the lights are grounded to the chassis through the metal that they sit in. So the black wire you see is not a ground. Start the truck and put it in reverse, with a helper. Test the remaining wires with a meter to find which is hot. This is the backup light. I'll go check mine tomorrow to see which bulbs are for what lighting purpose.
Good luck!

A couple of color guides. Here's what the factory wiring diagram says: For rear lights Blk/rd= backup lights Black= side marker, tag lights (on styleside) Brown=tail lights, tag light (on flareside) Green= RH stop and brake Yellow/blk= LH stop and brakeRear light wiring
BROWN: running light circuit YELLOW with BLACK stripe: driver-side stop/turn
GREEN: passenger-side stop/turn
BLACK with RED stripe: backup lamps
73 & 79 headlight-marker lights use same color codes Brown= side marker and parking lights
White-blue trace= turn signal
Red-black trace= Low beams
Green-black trace= Hi beams
Black=ground
Flat bed wiring…
Brown= Run Light Green= Brake light- L
Yellow= Brake Light- R
Black= Reverse Light??
The brown wire is the marker light (side and turn) it is also the top wire on the turn signal socket (three wires in a triangle). The black is ground of course. The white/blue it the turn signal.
