77 Power Steering column into a 76 Manual Steering Truck???
I have a 76 F150 that is missing almost everything on the column except for the steering wheel and the 2 collars that slide over the column underneath the steering wheel. And that's no exaggeration. As you can imagine, the steering wheel just flops all over the place. I'm not sure what the previous owner was trying to accomplish, although he did put an aftermarket shifter in the floor, so maybe it had something to do with that. I went to a local boneyard today and got an entire steering column from a 77 F150. This truck is also a manual but is a 4 speed in the floor instead of a 3 speed on the column like my 76 was originally. Now, from what I'm getting as far as feedback is that because the column I got today was on a power steering truck, it will be too short to use in my 76, which has manual steering. I'm trying to figure out what I can use from the 77 column to rebuild the one on the 76. Is it just a matter of using the shaft on my 76 with the rest of the column off of the 77 that I pulled today?
I could get the power steering unit and brackets off of the 77 as well but I don't really care to make the 76 power steering as I'm just trying to get it road worthy. Thanks
I dont see why you cant use it and just get a borgeson
Okay, I looked up Borgeson, since I've never heard of them. Looks like they sell power steering boxes but also sell adapters. Are you referring to possibly extending the shaft on mine with an adapter to make it work?
yes that end would have to come off your shaft,,,,and the Borg ( steering shaft) would just mate to your steering box,Its telescopic,,,,,or you can look into putting PS into your 150,,,but i would stay Ford PS my experience is in the 250 Category Im sure others will chime in

An adapter would be great. I'm a rookie when it comes to these columns, but I would be ecstatic if I could use it in it's entirety. Honestly, I wish I could put the 3 on the tree column back on in it's entirety but I don't know how long that would take to find the parts for. I'll have to look on this site to see what adapter I need, but I definitely appreciate the information!
shoot these guys on this site will have you all squared away if you want to build three on a tree between Bill and Mike
I have the blowup picture of what the column is supposed to have in it for the 3 speed but I would need some detailed information on how to piece this column back together and I have not found any good information on disassembly/reassembly. I've been looking to maybe buy a shop manual just to see how to put one of these back together. The linkage is still on the bottom end of the shaft under the hood, so those could be hooked back up fairly easily.
its all pretty basic ,bearings and snap rings,,,,,use a good snap ring wrench,I just picked one up on amazon from channel lock with assorted tips for sizing,,bronco graveyard sells turn signal switches,,,and those # on your blow up will be Ford # that will help you get proper snap rings and assorted parts,,,,,
I guess my next question is, since I've been looking for videos and write-ups for 73-79 F150's with no success, did these columns differ all that much say between, 67 and the 90's? It might increase my odds of finding someone doing this online if I can broaden my search criteria.
The power steering column is shorter than the manual steering box by a few inches.
Yeah, a few inches is significant. I guess I'll be making another trip to the truck to see about getting the power steering unit and associated hardware. Unless I can find someone locally to swap me a manual column for this power-steering one. I've looked around on the Borgeson site and that stuff is a little pricey. Seems like nice, high end equipment they carry. I'm working on a 300 dollar truck. I'm suprised there's not more aftermarket support for this.
Okay, another question. Can I somehow take the shaft out of my existing column, remove the the shaft from the power steering column and install the longer shaft into it? I'm sure some disassembly would need to happen, I can't imagine it being that simple, but if we're just talking about the splined shaft being too short, if I can take the existing shaft out of my 76 and install it in the power steering 77 column and have it work, then that'll be awesome.
You should be able to swap the steering column shafts between those columns.
I’ve had two other folks say the same thing so my hopes have come way up! Not sure if I’ll get a chance this weekend but I can promise you I will takes pics and video to document the process as I have searched hundreds of posts and have found nothing on anyone doing this process. I have a YouTube page that I share these videos on, so hopefully, if everything works, I’ll be able to pass it on to the next guy.
I’ve swapped shafts in a column before (2wd to 4wd) & it was pretty straight forward. The columns were the 78/79 style, but it should be a similar process.
